ABOUT ME

Hi everyone!

My name is Vanessa Hu, and I'm a Livingston High School student, class of 2019. I love learning about languages and cultures, so I thought I'd start a blog to help practice. This could range from general updates on my life, to random stories, practice sentences, interesting facts I learned about a language, and whatever else I can think of!

I am a native English speaker, and I've studied Chinese and Spanish for quite a number of years. I understand Shanghainese, though I can't speak it, and I recently started studying Japanese. In Summer 2018, I participated in the NSLI-Y program under the U.S. State Department and studied Tajiki Persian for six weeks in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, which was one of the best experiences of my life. If any potential applicants are reading this, NSLI-Y Tajikistan / NSLI-Y Persian is amazing -- my blog (click on tab above) has many posts about what I did / my thoughts!

I'm also quite interested in linguistics. I've participated in the North American Computational Linguistics Olympiad since the eighth grade, and I am lucky enough to have participated in the 2017 International Linguistics Olympiad this summer in Dublin, Ireland.

Finally, I run a student language magazine called New Semantics, which is a collection of student works about language and culture. Pieces have already been released! For more info, and if anyone is interested in submitting work to Volume 2, click here :)

Come with me on my language endeavors!
